Angela Hoskins and Terry Butler present A Course in Miracles- a book and a spiritual path which has greatly enriched their lives.
Long term students of A Course in Miracles, Angela and Terry have been running an ongoing study group of this celebrated book at the Isbourne since April 2003. The book, which came into being in the early 1970s in America, has to date been translated into at least 23 different languages, and study groups like Terry and Angela's can now be found all over the world. Many prominent spiritual teachers have studied the Course, including a number of leading speakers visiting the Isbourne, who share its principles in their talks.
Here, Angela introduces the Course and the weekly Isbourne study group and explains how it can foster peace, joy and love in your daily life.
After spending a number of years 'searching' and studying and spending time with many different spiritual pathways and faiths, Terry and I both discovered 'A Course in Miracles' almost 'by accident' ...As if!
Terry came across the book at his workplace, kept picking it up and glancing through it many, many times over for a period of about a year. I kept coming across quotes from the book in other spiritual books and publications. It sounded wonderful, and I felt very attracted to its message. A Course in Miracles states that our experiences in the world are a direct result of the way we think. What we feel when we look upon anything outside of ourselves, depends on our perception (interpretation) of what we see. With the help of a Workbook of 365 daily lessons, the Course invites us to be willing to change our perceptions and therefore change our feelings and experience of the world.
We were talking to an acquaintance some time later who said she was going to study A Course in Miracles at a centre near Worcester. Terry decided to attend about two years before I did, and since then, we have been regularly attending workshops and seminars to further extend our own understanding and knowledge of the Course.
Terry and I have been running the A Course in Miracles group at the Isbourne since April 2003. At that time, there were just a few of us and over the years, the group has evolved to become the loving and supportive space that it is. All our group members feel 'at home' there, are accepted and loved and able to discover who they really are, by acknowledging the 'blocks' that are preventing them from experiencing their light. This applies to long-time members and newcomers alike.
Terry and I are working the Course just as all group members, and we all teach and learn from each other. The Course says 'Teach what you want to learn' and this happens through the self-study of the Course, our discussion and sharing in the group, and from learning to understand its practice of the message of forgiveness - for ourselves and others.
An important part of our group experience is laughter. We have great fun and we learn to take ourselves and the world more lightly.
The Course presents a very different view of the world to the one we habitually see, and encourages us to ask for 'miracles' (a change in perception) so that we may experience more and more peace in our daily lives.
The incentive to do the course is quite simply the desire to experience more peace, joy and love in your life. And the key to this is practising forgiveness. A quote from the Course, beautifully expresses the serenity this principle can bring to your life:
"What could you want Forgiveness cannot give? Do you want peace? Forgiveness offers it. Do you want happiness; a quiet mind; a certainty of purpose and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world? All this Forgiveness offers you; and more. It sparkles on your eyelids as you awake, and gives you joy with which to meet the day; it soothes your forehead while you sleep and rests upon your eyelids so you see no dreams of malice and attack.'
I can honestly say that A Course in Miracles has changed our individual experience of life for the better. We still have work to do, and we look forward to healing this with A Course in Miracles.

An amazing string of events brought the A Course of Miracles book into being, as described in the preface of the Course, while a more detailed account is given in the book A Journey Without Distance. There are many books written about A Course in Miracles, from the varying perspective of different authors, and these books are often the way many Course students have found their way to studying the Course itself.
