Book Review: What Is Mindfulness? – Tamara Russell

May 9th, 2017

This is a fantastic little book stuffed full of information. Its size is actually a bonus as it’s easy to slip into a handbag or pocket for reading on the go. However, don’t be fooled into thinking this is a light read just because it’s pocket sized, as it is one of the best books on the subject I have read. It contains so much information which is backed up by quantifiable research.

Despite the slightly academic look and feel to the book, the format is very easy to read and understand. There are lots of practical elements and exercises to do. One of my favourite parts of the book are the ‘Focus On’ sections, which really make you question your own motivations.

The book helps you get to grips with not only what mindfulness is but (sometimes more importantly) what it is not.

My only criticism of the book would be the rather unappealing cover: I doubt I would be drawn to pick it up off the bookstore shelf, as it is rather plain and not at all tempting to me personally.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about embracing mindfulness into their lives.
