A medium acts as an intermediary between the living and the spirits of people who have passed over. The medium, whose gifts may be innate or the result of training, may hear (clairaudience), see (clairvoyance) or feel (clairsentience) spirits near them and relay what they seek to communicate to you during a reading or seance, or to other members of an audience if the medium is demonstrating their gifts publicly ('platform mediumship').

Some mediums enter a trance state in which their voice box is taken over by a spirit and once he or she comes out of the trance they may have little awareness of what took place. Automatic writing and drawing are other means by which spirits may communicate through a medium. During some seances, physical phenomena such as table movements, sounds or items being thrown may occur.
